43 European wineries earn the ECO-PROWINE label
European wineries can now easily and inexpensively assess their sustainability level by using a web tool developed by the European project ECO-PROWINE.
Weingut Triebl beteiligt sich als Pilotbetrieb

Wine producers can enter data on the quantity and cost of the inputs used in their process (fuel, electricity, water, fertilizers, pesticides, glass bottles, closures, cardboard boxes ecc.); a specific algorithm, developed on the basis of the best scientific and practical knowledge presently available, transforms and merges these data in a global indicator that, together with elements on winery role in the local social context, determines the sustainability level of each producer.

The system offers also a detailed analysis of the causes of environmental impact, therefore helps in the identification of the priority improvement actions.
More information on the weight of different inputs and on the indicator set up are provided in an article published on the journal Infowine.

Wineries having a sustainability level above certain threshold are granted with the right of use of the ECO-PROWINE logo, that can be incorporate in their communication material in order to put in evidence their engagement in favor of the environment.

Until now, 43 European pilot wineries - listed below - obtained such recognition.

The group of pilot wineries have played a fundamental role in the project. They provided data on their inputs, that allowed the constitution of an EU benchmark; the threshold level for labelling is based on its average and standard deviation. They also collaborated in testing the web tool prototype and suggested improvements and simplifications.

The web tool for self assessment of the sustainability level will soon be available for all EU wineries, beyond the group pf pilot wineries.

Interested wine producers can approach the assessment at three levels:
a) a quick assessment, where they will be asked to enter in the web tool a limited number of data on their inputs, to get a first overview of their status
b) a detailed assessment, where more data will be required in order to complete the sustainability analysis and get the sustainability global indicator value. At this step wineries will also have access to the project improvement practices collection
c) if the sustainability level is above threshold, the winery can ask to be granted of the right of use of the ECO-PROWINE logo, and go through the validation procedure.

While the quick assessment is accessible for free, in the other two steps the wineries are asked to participate the system management costs; although, the fee will be significantly lower than for a normal certification procedure.
